How to determine if you have oily skin

This characterizes the oily skin type: It tends to have large pores, produces an oily film especially on the forehead, chin, and nose, and is often plagued by blackheads and pimples. Oily skin shines quickly, which is why we usually have the feeling that we want to cover the shine with powder. The right care is important for oily skin: the focus is on cleansing. We will explain to you exactly what you need to pay attention to in the daily care of oily skin and how to balance this skin type.

What is the difference between combination skin? Combination skin has a complexion that quickly becomes oily at the T-zone, but the core of the skin is often poor in moisture. This skin type combines different aspects of different skin types and requires its own skincare.

Great consolation for all those who suffer from their rapidly shiny skin: In later years, it compensates us with a young and fresh appearance, because unlike dry skin, oily skin does not wrinkle as quickly, it gets wrinkles much later than all other skin types. What to do if you have oily skin?

Oily skin tends to produce excessive sebum. Hypersensitive receptors in the outer cell areas stimulate the sebaceous gland. These receptors are controlled by hormones, they connect with the inner cells of the gland, whereupon sebum production is stimulated. If these receptors are genetically too sensitive to hormonal signals, even the slightest stimulus is enough to stimulate fat production supernaturally and thus more than necessary.

This results in a greasy shine in the middle of the face, as well as pimples and blackheads, mostly on the face and décolleté up to the shoulders and back. Especially the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) should be cleaned thoroughly - but never too often and too aggressively - in case of oily skin.

Cleansing for oily skin

Anything that provokes dry skin can help make oily skin drier, e.g. products such as cleansing foams or gels and gentle exfoliants. A mechanical peel contains granules that sand away excess horny cells, thus preventing the sebaceous glands from becoming blocked.

Cleansing masks are also suitable for oily skin, grease, and horn scales stick to it when removed. Products that contain little alcohol are also permitted for oily skin. It is important not to use products that have a refatting effect such as cleansing milk or oils. What would be too much for other skin types is allowed for oily skin: cleansing the face in the morning and evening. Two to three times a week, the skin can be freed from dead skin cells and dirt with a mild peeling and then clarified and cared for with a mask, for example, made of healing earth.

Care for oily skin

After cleaning, only creams with a lot of moisture should be used that do not contain any fats. Ideally, the ingredients are skin soothing and antibacterial. For this type of skin, it is especially important to use a specially adapted care product, because its needs are so difficult. In general: Do not use oily ointments or cosmetics that are too rich to care for oily skin. On the other hand, oily skin can use moisture, especially in winter. Many moisturizers that are declared as care for oily skin contain matting pigments that delay the shine.

This helps especially against pimples

If the sebaceous glands produce too much fat, the hair channels fill up and clog - pimples sprout. In extreme cases, acne can occur. Due to the overproduction of fat, the skin's natural acid mantle loses its balance, bacteria can penetrate into the pores and the skin becomes inflamed. A good cleansing strategy helps against the bacteria; if the pimples are already there, the skin needs antibacterial and skin-soothing ingredients. Take calendula blossoms, for example, because they contain anti-inflammatory substances. The flowers can also be used to prepare a decoction that acts as a compress against inflamed pimples.

A steam bath, which you can simply make yourself, also helps against skin impurities. Put a few drops of chamomile solution in hot water, place a towel over your head, and hold your face over the steam for about five minutes. This opens the pores and afterward, the skin can optimally absorb a cleansing mask. Even the good old cucumber is said to shrink the pores. Due to its content of vitamins, enzymes, and mild fruit acids, cucumber extract has a skin cleansing and clarifying effect. Cucumber also has a pore-constricting and refining effect, making it ideal for the care of oily and impure skin.

Make-up for oily skin

Make-up traditionally contains fat to keep it in place. Therefore it should be used sparingly. Mattifying make-up can cover oily skin and skin impurities but must be refreshed throughout the day. Foundations especially for oily skin with matte pigments and ingredients that soothe impurities are ideal for making up this type of skin. Powder in compact or loose form is obligatory to mattify shiny areas of the face. A clever trick for in-between: small strips of paper, so-called blotting paper, can absorb excess grease like a small sponge. But you can also use a tissue to dab off shiny areas in between.

The golden rule of removing make-up in the evening applies, especially to this skin type. Before going to bed, it is essential to remove make-up from the skin so that powder and grease residues do not clog the pores and provoke new pimples.

Oily areas of skin on the body

Oily skin can also leave us with irregularities on the body. Depending on the body region, the sebaceous glands vary in size and produce more or less sebum. Especially scalp, face, shoulders, and the upper part of the chest and back belong to these skin areas. A light fluid is suitable for caring for the body; high-fat creams such as body butter or caring body oils should not necessarily be used for oily body skin. Oil baths should also be used. Shower gels with soothing ingredients and healing earth baths are generally well tolerated by oily body skin. Peelings with gentle particles based on sugar molecules can clear the skin.

One cause of skin impurities on the body, especially on the back, can also be clothing made of synthetic material that is too tight and provokes sweating. The synthetic material does not absorb the sweat and the pores become clogged. This prevents excess sebum from draining off and causes blackheads to develop, which are inflamed by bacteria contained in sweat. Light cotton clothing can protect the skin.
