Work-life blending: What is it exactly?
You've probably heard of work-life balance - a strategy that protects us from being overwhelmed by not sacrificing enough free time despite having a lot of work to do. This way, we don't rush into work and forget about hobbies, friends, etc. However, this concept assumes that jobs and private life are completely separate. As if they were two weights that have to be balanced.

Somewhat more contemporary is the so-called work-life blending: Here, professional and private areas of life merge with each other. This is exactly what we are experiencing more and more - if only because of the increased opportunities in the home office, where we work for the job in our homes. Work-life blending can bring some compelling benefits, but it also carries a risk or two.

Examples in everyday life
According to GFU, 42 percent of business professionals also read work emails during their free time - this is where work-life blending begins. This demonstrates where the new trend is actually coming from: the origin of the work-life blending movement is clearly digitization.

Mobile working through laptops, tablets, and co. allows us to no longer have to work tied to a specific location. This also loosens the traditional 9-to-5 time pattern, as there is often no check on who starts working when or who stops working when. Through work-life blending, we are dissolving the clear demarcation between the job and the private sphere. What exactly might this look like in everyday life? These scenarios are typical:

We meet up with our colleagues after work - maybe even become friends.
We work at home, in the comfort of our own homes. This mixes the work and private spheres.
We opt for flexible working hours. We may even work at unusual times, as it suits us (in our private lives). We decide for ourselves when to start and end work.
We quickly complete a few work tasks in our free time - when it suits us.

Work-life blending: the advantages
More and more people are opting for work-life blending. This also often happens unconsciously - without realizing it, we mix work and private life. Work-life blending comes with a few benefits. These include:

you work more flexibly
you can live according to your priorities
you can organize your time more freely
you get a lot done without feeling like you are working all the time
your professional network grows
you can organize your day more individually
Those who enjoy their work, but want more self-determination and flexibility, could benefit from work-life blending.

Work-life blending: the disadvantages
As nice as all these benefits sound, work-life blending also comes with a few challenges that shouldn't go unmentioned. The many freedoms and high flexibility can also mean disadvantages, namely:

it's harder to stop working
there is a risk of being overwhelmed
on the other hand, distractions are greater - procrastination can occur
work is omnipresent as it merges with our free time
Those who are not passionate about their job may feel stressed and overwhelmed by the job-leisure mix. Perfectionists should also take heed: As work is integrated with leisure, it can be hard to complete tasks (and not work through the night).
